Mary Magdalene
Mary Magdalene is known to us all as a historical and biblical person. However, her portrayal in the Bible is colored by the patriarchal society of the time and the image of women associated with it. We can therefore assume with a clear conscience that the portrayal of Mary Magdalene in the Bible in no way does justice to her actual personality.
This is also the result of research by people who have gone in search of traces of Mary Magdalene over the centuries up to the present day. These traces exist, especially in the south of France, but they also exist in old documents that have not been included in the Bible. In these documents, a very different image of Mary Magdalene is evoked. It is the image of a great woman who was self-confident, self-determined, and very spiritual and loving, and had lived that way.
Mary of Magdala, together with other women, was one of the disciples of Jesus, who is always mentioned as the first of the women. She is defined as the only person besides Jesus by the place where she comes from (Mary of Magdalene or Magdalene and Jesus of Nazareth). This underlines her special position, which for the authors of the ancient texts she held at the side of Jesus and which was granted to her in the first centuries after Christ’s birth.

In ancient Christian texts she is spoken of as the apostle of the apostles, the pneumatic Mary, the prophetess. The designation Apostle to the Apostles clearly indicates that Mary Magdalene had been the legitimate successor of Jesus.
A quote from the Nag Hammadi Codex reads “she said this as a woman who had fully understood”. This quote indicates to us that Mary Magdalene had completed the Way. She was therefore also called pneumatic Mary, a woman “who became completely pure spirit“.
